Candi Sewu

Sewu Temple is a group of temples located close to Prambanan Temple. This temple is estimated to have been built in the 8th century, on the orders of the rulers of the Mataram Kingdom at that time, namely Rakai Panangkaran (746-784 AD) and Rakai Pikatan who were Hindu. Although the king was Hindu, the Mataram Kingdom at that time was strongly influenced by the Buddhist Syailendra Dynasty. Experts suspect that Sewu Temple was the center of religious activities for the Buddhist community. This assumption is based on the contents of the andesite stone inscription found in one of the ancillary temples. The inscription, written in Old Malay, is known as the Manjusrigrta Inscription. The inscription tells of the activities of perfecting the inscription called Wajrasana Manjusrigrha in the year 714 S (792 AD). The name Manjusri is also mentioned in the Kelurak Inscription from 782 AD which was found near Lumbung Temple.
