Gedung SCS

The SCS Building, also known as the Birao Building, is a significant remnant of colonial railway history and architecture. Designed by renowned architect Henri Maclaine Pont in the early 1900s, it served as the administrative center for the Semarang–Cirebon Steam Tram Company (SCS), which operated the Semarang–Cirebon railway line via Tegal. The building was designed with consideration for the tropical climate, with an east–west orientation to allow for optimal natural lighting and airflow. Beyond its function as a transportation hub, the building played a role in Indonesia’s independence struggle: on September 10, 1945, Tegal youths hoisted the Indonesian flag here in defiance of the Japanese occupation. While it was later used by Universitas Pancasakti Tegal, the building is currently underutilized.
