Monumen Serangan Umum 1 Maret 1949
The March 1st Monument is located on Jalan Panembahan Senopati, right next to Fort Vredeburg, and was built to commemorate the March 1st General Offensive that occurred on March 1, 1949. In this incident, Indonesian guerrilla forces succeeded in capturing the city of Yogyakarta from the Dutch and controlled it for six hours, under the command of Colonel Suharto. This heroic event was later known as the "Six Hours in Yogya" and became an important momentum in Indonesia's diplomatic struggle, which culminated in the implementation of the Round Table Conference (RTC) in The Hague, Netherlands.
