Masjid Agung Demak dan Makam Raja-Raja Demak
The Great Mosque of Demak is one of the oldest mosques in Indonesia. This mosque is located in Kauman Village, Bintoro Sub-district, Demak. This mosque is believed to have been a gathering place for the Walisongo. The founder of this mosque was Raden Patah, the first king of the Demak Kingdom in the 15th century AD. Raden Patah together with the Walisongo founded this mosque. The Great Mosque of Demak is an icon of a typical Javanese mosque with its distinctive building shape, namely a roof with a tile roof. On the mihrab of the mosque, there is a picture similar to a turtle, which is the candra sengkala memet, which reads Sirna Ilang Kertaning Bumi, some also interpret it as Sarira Sunyi Kiblating Gusti. Both mean the year 1401 Saka. The turtle image consists of a head which means the number 1 (one), 4 legs mean the number 4 (four), the turtle body means the number 0 (zero), the turtle tail means the number 1 (one). From this symbol, it is estimated that the Great Mosque of Demak was built in 1401 Saka, coinciding with 1 Safar in the Islamic calendar.
