Candi Sari
According to estimates, this temple was built in the 8th century AD, namely during the reign of Rakai Panangkaran, at the same time as the construction of the Kalasan Temple. The two temples do have many similarities, both in terms of architecture and reliefs. The relationship between the two temples is explained in the Kalasan Inscription (700 Saka / 778 AD). The Kalasan Inscription explains that the religious advisors of the Syailendra Dynasty had suggested that Maharaja Tejapurnama Panangkarana, who is thought to be Rakai Panangkaran, build a sacred building to worship Dewi Tara and a monastery for Buddhist priests. Kalasan Temple was built to worship Dewi Tara, while Sari Temple was built to house Buddhist priests. Its function as a dormitory or residence can be seen from the overall shape and parts of the building and from its interior. That this temple is a Buddhist building can be seen from the stupa at its peak.
