Johar Market, located in the heart of Semarang, is one of Indonesia’s most iconic traditional markets. Designed by Dutch architect Thomas Karsten and inaugurated in 1933, the market featured a revolutionary modern design that made it the largest and most modern market in Southeast Asia at the time.
Known as the most beautiful market in the region, Johar Market suffered a major fire in 2015 that destroyed much of the building. Following extensive revitalization efforts, it was reopened in early 2022 with a renewed look that preserves its historical and architectural significance.
