Situated on Jalan Proklamasi, the Tegal Main Post Office is a heritage building reflecting the evolution of communication and colonial architecture in Indonesia. Built in 1930, the structure initially functioned as a Dutch naval headquarters before being converted into a post and telegraph office in 1954.
Its construction was closely linked to the Great Post Road (Anyer–Panarukan), initiated by Governor-General Herman Willem Daendels in the early 19th century to facilitate mail delivery and inter-regional communication across Java.
