Kaloran Fortress is a historical site located in front of Pasar Pagi, Tegal. Two structures resembling chess pawns are believed to be the gates to the Kaloran Palace—the former administrative center of the Tegal Regency. Each building measures approximately 6 meters in length and width, with a height of 3.5 meters, and was constructed using thick bricks characteristic of traditional defensive architecture.
In the Dutch colonial era around the 1920s, the fort briefly functioned as an electrical substation to power the city. Although the surrounding area has changed significantly, the two buildings remain intact and are included in the city’s list of potential heritage sites. Historically, Kaloran was a village north of the Tegal Palace (Keraton), and the fortress served as the ceremonial entrance to the regency’s central government compound.
