Tek Hay Kiong Temple, one of the oldest and most revered temples in Indonesia, was established in 1760 by Captain Souw Pek Gwan. Initially named Cin Jin Bio (Zhen Ren Miao), the temple served as a spiritual and social hub for Tegal’s Chinese community.
One of its most unique features is the sacred gamelan ensemble “Kiai Naga Mulya,” crafted in Purworejo in 1860. The temple also holds deep historical significance due to its connection to Tek Hay Cin Jin, a local hero in the 1741–1742 “Chinese War” against the VOC. His leadership helped drive the Dutch out of Tegal.
