Gunung Wukir Temple is the oldest temple that can be connected to the year number. Based on the Canggal inscription found in 1879 in the ruins, this temple was founded during the reign of King Sanjaya from the Ancient Mataram Kingdom, namely in 732 AD (654 Saka years). This inscription has a lot of information related to the Medang Kingdom or Hindu Mataram. Based on this inscription, Gunung Wukir Temple may have had the original name Shiwalingga or Kunjarakunja.

The complex where the ruins of the Gunung Wukir temple are located has a size of 50 m × 50 m. The Gunung Wukir temple building itself is made of andesite stone consisting of at least one main temple and three ancillary temples. In addition to the inscription, in the Gunung Wukir temple complex, a yoni, lingga (symbol of the god Shiva), and a statue of a female cow or Nandi were also found.
