Mbah Sambu

The tomb of Mbah Sambu is located in the Great Mosque complex of Lasem, Rembang. Mbah Sambu's real name was Sayyid Abdurrahman Basayaiban and died in 1671. He was the son of Prince Benawa, son of Jaka Tingkir alias Sultan Hadiwijaya, King of the Pajang Kingdom which was the forerunner of the Islamic Mataram Kingdom. The latter name was also the son-in-law of Sultan Trenggono, Sultan Demak III. The second version states that Mbah Sambu came from Samarkand, as did several other wali in Java. However, Abdullah, the caretaker of Mbah Sambu's tomb, stated that the first version was more convincing (Interview with Abdullah, Caretaker of Mbah Sambu's Tomb, August 16, 2019).
