Keraton Kasultanan Yogyakarta dan Masjid Gedhe Kauman

The Yogyakarta Sultanate Palace (hereinafter referred to as the Yogya Palace) is the most important icon in the center of Yogyakarta City. Its existence is a marker of the existence of a political and cultural power that has become the mecca of Java for several centuries. The Yogya Palace is the result of the Giyanti Agreement in 1755 AD, between Sunan Pakubuwana III and Prince Mangkubumi on the native side and N. Hartigh on the Dutch side. The agreement divided politically and culturally the two Islamic Mataram kingdoms in Java, namely the Surakarta Kasunanan and the Yogyakarta Sultanate. Prince Mangkubumi who received the land of Yogyakarta, then ordained himself as Sultan Hamengkubuwana I. By Ricklefs, he is called the greatest king of Java after Sultan Agung who has succeeded in building a government structure, territory, bureaucracy, spatial planning, art, culture, and environment. All of this is manifested in various physical facilities, one of which is the Yogya Palace with its various physical facilities, namely the palace environment (cepuri and baluwarti), the town square, the Great Mosque, and the Great Market. These four things form an inseparable whole in the structure of traditional Javanese urban planning (catur gatra tunggal) (Hadiyanta, 2017: 129).
